PBS exposes Assisted Living Facility dangers you should know about before you select a home for yourself or a loved one. Frontline's 4-part series, which aired last week, focuses on one family's tragic story at an assisted living facility in CA. Even sadder than this one story is that the owner of the facility--Emeritus, the largest owner of ALFs in the country, it is not the worst in the industry. It is AVERAGE and that is the saddest thing about this one family's story--care, service, and safety in the assisted living industry are, on average BAD.

Frontline's 4-part series, which aired last week, focuses on one family's tragic story at an assisted living facility in CA. Even sadder than this one story is that the owner of the facility--Emeritus, the largest owner of ALFs in the country, it is not the worst in the industry. It is AVERAGE and that is the saddest thing about this one family's story--care, service, and safety in the assisted living industry are, on average BAD. While there are better and worst ALF owners out there, the point is that the problems described in the PBS expose' - under-staffing, poor training of care staff, rampant turnover, cost-cutting, cover-ups and an all-consuming focus on profits--are present at ALFs throughout the country. And these problems, which un-informed consumers are as likely to encounter as not, lead to needlessly tragic outcomes. Please, for you and your loved one's sake, take the time and make the effort to find these problems in advance of choosing an assisted living home. By doing that, you are much more likely NOT to experience a tragic family nightmare like the one presented in the Frontline series, or the ones experienced by me and my parents and family, or the thousands of tragedies that are needlessly experienced by good people in assisted living facilities everywhere every year-- good people who deserved and could and should have had better.
